- Present)
President/Owner (January 1979 - Present)
Pyramid
Computing was founded in 1979 as a part time
business primarily for development and marketing
of Software for Personal Computers. In the
years since its inception, three products have
been developed and are currently being
supported. In May 1987 it evolved to a full

The following
is a list of the consulting engagements while
with Pyramid Computing. Each engagement lists
the client as well as the nature of the project.
Wells Fargo Home
Mortgage |
Project Tracking,
Automated Decisioning |
Des Moines, Iowa |
MsProject, MsOffice VBA |
One of multiple Project
Managers on the WFHM Automated Decisioning
Integration program to integrate a new
rules-based automated decisioning engine across
the three Wells Fargo companies. Developed
automated tools to monitor this 250+ person
program. Project Scheduling was provided by
Microsoft Project. Used Visual Basic for
Applications in MsProject, Excel, Word,
PowerPoint & Outlook to develop the following
automation.
-
Created process that
extracted assignments from the multiple
MsProject schedules and created tasks in
each person’s Outlook Tasks folder. These
tasks used Outlook reminders for Start and
Finish dates. When Outlook tasks were
marked as complete, it sent a status update
email to the Project Manager.
-
Created process that
posted task updates to the MsProject
schedules from the status update emails
generated from Outlook.
-
Created process to
automatically request task status updates
via email for active tasks without a current
status update.
-
Created process to
extract Late vs. Baseline tasks from the
multiple MsProject schedules and import into
Excel for review. This allowed anyone to
review this information and did not require
a MsProject license.
-
Created process to
generate Start & Finish S-Curve charts from
multiple MsProject schedules and
automatically create an indexed PowerPoint
presentation.
-
Created processes to
manage Deliverables and Work Products.
Created standard workflow (create, review,
revise, approve) that can be inserted into
the MsProject schedule to identify these
tracking milestones. Excel reports were
created that extracted Deliverables and Work
Products from the multiple MsProject
schedules for items that were late or coming
due soon.
IBM / CMS
(Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services) |
Earned Value Management System,
Oracle Financials |
Baltimore, Maryland |
MsProject, Microframe Program Manager,
Winsight, MsOffice VBA, Perl |
Designed and
implemented an integrated Earned Value
Management System (EVMS) using Custom off the
shelf (COTS) tools with custom interfaces to
form the individual tools into an integrated
system. The program (Healthcare Integrated
General Ledger Accounting System (HIGLAS)) is a
ten-year plan to implement Oracle Financials to
receive Medicare claim data electronically from
the 50 state Medicare claim processors. The
EVMS system that was implemented to monitor this
200+ person program was approved by the
government agency (CMS) as fulfilling the 32 OMB
EVMS guidelines or equivalent. Project
Scheduling was provided by Microsoft Project,
Earned Value calculation and basic reporting
were provided by MPM and graphical EVM reporting
was provided by Winsight. It used Visual Basic
for Applications in MsProject, Excel, Outlook &
Access to develop the following automation.
-
Created
interfaces from four IBM labor reporting
systems to post daily actuals at the work
package level to the Integrated Master
Schedule (IMS) in MsProject.
-
Created
and Excel spreadsheet to allow review of
actuals posted by the Work Package Manager
(WPM) and updates to Estimate to Complete
(ETC) and planned Start & Finish dates. The
changes made in this spreadsheet were posted
to the IMS on a weekly basis.
-
Created
Excel tools to extract data from MsProject
and provide the ability to maintain work
package data, milestones, resource
assignments and predecessor relationships.
These tools allowed the thirty work package
managers to provide updates to a central IMS
administrator without ever having direct
update access to the IMS.
-
Created
several Excel based reports/query tools that
allowed Work Package Managers or Cost
Account Managers to extract current data
from the system relating to Deliverables,
Milestone Variances, Resource Allocation &
Actuals & Budget vs. Actuals.
-
Extensive
use of automation was used to distribute
information via email. For example, weekly
reports were zipped and sent as an email
attachment to the Work Package and Cost
Account Managers. Work Authorizations were
created as PDF files and attached to an
individual email sent to each of the 200+
resources weekly.
IBM / KAISER PERMANENTE |
Project Management, CIS Development |
Boulder, Colorado |
MsProject, MsOffice VBA, Perl |
Designed an
integrated project plan process using Microsoft
Project. This consisted of over 50 concurrent
project plans linked by a common resource pool.
Project plans were source controlled thru
checkout / check-in. Customized the MsProject
plans with over 200 components (Fields, Tables,
Views, Filters, Forms, Calendars, Macros). Used
Visual Basic for Applications in Excel, Outlook
& Access to develop the following automation.
-
Created a
weekly process to integrate these plans and
distribute the centrally maintained
components.
-
Developed
an automated process to maintain the
individual resource calendars for 250+
people in MsProject by extracting vacation
days from the Lotus Notes Vacation Planner
tool.
-
Created
an Excel timesheet to collect weekly actuals
and allow bottom-up re-estimating thru
remaining work and start/finish date
adjustments. This data was then
automatically posted to the MsProject
plans. Developed an automated process to
generate these timesheets and email them
each week.
-
Extracted
and reported Earned Value information as
well as calculating EV performance ratios (SPI,
CPI, TCPI, etc.) not provided by MsProject.
-
Created
an automated process to generate S-curve
charts as PDF files showing cumulative
baseline, projected and actual
work/starts/finishes for each MsProject
plan.
-
Created
an automated MsProject plan auditing process
that analyzed each plan for over thirty
items. i.e. Task guidelines compliance, Task
relationship quality, Resource assignment
anomalies, etc. This created a custom email
for each plan owner with the specific plan
issues identified.
-
Created a
consolidated Resource Information report
showing baseline, actual and projected hours
by week by MsProject plan. This was used to
analyze resource-leveling issues.

Project DBA, Mainframe Downsizing |
Houston, Texas
Multi |
tier, MicroFocus COBOL, Oracle, Novell |
Functioned as
Project DBA and System Architect during the
downsizing of this project. The project used
over 140 database tables that occupy 12GB of
storage. Developed middle-ware to maintain
duplicate read-only copies on the PC/LAN Oracle
database of 30 databases that were maintained on
the Mainframe in Datacom/DB. This process is
completely data driven and consists of a
Mainframe extract program and an Oracle database
update program. Changes are detected on the
Mainframe; the changed rows from each table are
extracted and transmitted to the LAN along with
the copybook for the table. The Oracle update
program processes the copybook and builds an
internal table that maps the input data fields
and data types. It then uses the Oracle SQL
dictionary tables to dynamically create an
Update or Insert command with the data from the
mainframe extract record. It also performs a
full database record count comparison and
hash-total to ensure that the databases are in
sync.
